Star Magic Storms Cow Palace

By Bradford Adkins

First the bad news – World Champion Supersinger and eagerly-anticipated by the audiences to give us real singing, Jed Madela, was a no- show. Reportedly, his US Visa was not approved in time for the event last Sunday, June 28th at the Cow Palace in Daly City , CA .

One of the most applauded groups during last Sunday's Star Magic World Tour concert, L-R, were Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu and Jake Cuenca (they appeared multiple times during the show), the cast of the highly successful teleserye, 'Tayong Dalawa'.

Brothers, Joe and Pao Paloma braved the summer heat last weekend to see in person, Star Magic's Maja Salvador and Kim Chiu, perform onstage.

Diether Ocampo, right, shown here arriving at the Los Angeles Airport last Wednesday evening around 8:44pm, June 24th, being welcomed by a Los Angeles Magazine's Business Manager, Eugene Supnet. It was later announced before the twin city shows, that Diether suffered seizures and was unable to perform with the other Star Magic artists in both cities - LA and San Francisco last weekend.

Secondly, Star Magic’s resident hunk, Diether Ocampo was also a no-show. He was announced to have suffered from seizures and collapsed due to exhaustion and over-fatigue during the early day rehearsals of the Los Angeles show.

Aside from the Cow Palace venue, they were also both no-shows in the earlier Los Angeles leg of the show last Saturday.

Bea Alonzo and Shaina Magdayao arrive at the airport and performed together with 40 plus other Star Magic artists in Cow Palace last Sunday, June 28th.

Now the good news – in summary, all the 40 plus Star Magic talens were collectively a talented group and gave us high-powered numbers (they obviously had a concept, rehearsed and spent time in choosing their colorful costumes).

Probably one of the last pictures taken of Diether Ocampo before he collapsed from seizures last week, was taken at the Los Angeles International Airport upon his arrival last Wednesday night, before the artists boarded for their respective hotels.

Now,the highlights: Sexy and daring both - Angelica Panganiban and Star Circle Quest Finalist, Roxanne Guinoo delivered not just one, but two sultry dance numbers and pumped up the temperature to higher limits, as the male audiences became wide-eyed. Not to be outdone, the ASAP Coverboys provided the same to warm effect on the women.

The cast of ‘Tayong Dalawa’ – Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson and Jake Cuenca were welcomed with the loudest whispers everytime they come up onstage performing their numbers.
The Original Teleserye Queen, Ms. Claudine Barretto attended to support the event, and was seen with both her parents and brothers.

The Ultimate Heartthrob, Piolo Pascual, as usual, elicitied the loudest cheers from the predominantly female audience of the Cow Palace event, Star Magic World Tour last Sunday. Photo by Oscar Magtibay

Comedienne par Excellence, Pokwang, garbed in an all-leather outfit, emotes onstage during one of her numerous numbers at the Star Magic World Tour in Daly City, CA last Sunday.

Pokwang and Chokoleit provided the comedic emceeing chores competently, as usual.

But not anymore, since iPhone has addressed most of the wants and needs of the ever-needy technocrats.

Asian Dolls Invade Guantanamo Bay

Another milestone has been achieved by 5 beautiful and talented ladies. Collectively known as the Asian Dolls ,they wowed a SRO audience at the U.S. Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba last Saturday, June 13. They are the first ever Asian group to have performed at Gitmo (as the locals would call it ).

The event was organized by the Filipino community of Gitmo in line with the celebration of Philippine Independence. These ladies captivated the audience including military servicemen and contract workers with their charismatic song and dance numbers. They showcased selected numbers from the Disco era to current chart toppers. These ladies exhibited different Asian cultural dances and to the crowds’ delight, even pulled out selected servicemen from the audience to dance with them. In between productions, they showed off their individual vocal prowess by belting out popular showtunes which, once again left the audience in awe. A poignant rendition of God Bless America was sung by the ladies as their finale. The audience were emotionally empowered.

The Asian Dolls are comprised of 5 Fil-American Ladies . Each “doll” represents their corresponding Asian country .Singer-Actress and Philippine Television host Miriam Pantig headlines the group. She is well-known by the Filipino-American Community as The Dynamic Diva. Sexy actress Patricia Javier , who represents the Philippines alternates Pantig as headliner. Shalimar Santiago, who represents China is a former Miss Teen Philippines titleholder. She has appeared in various musical comedies and stage shows. Noelle Bonus, who represents Korea is a ramp and print model. She has also opened up concerts for famous Filipino celebrities. Trisha Badong (Vietnam) is a nurse by profession. She is also schooled in the art of modern, ballroom, belly dancing, hosting, acting, singing and jazz. Sherly Silvia Santosa, a.k.a Sher (Japan) is a triple threat British Indonesian performer. Her top achievements include performing for Sharon Stone, the president of the United States and Senator Hillary Clinton.

The Asian Dolls were created by businessman Ben Ramos, who happens to be the owner of Edna’s Ichiban Library. He envisoned an all Asian “sing and dance” girl group to promote Asian culture and heritage with style, glamour and inventiveness. After months of auditions held in San Diego and the Bay Area, his vision had finally become a reality. The group’s director/choreographer is Carole Gatdula, a former VIP (Vilma In Person) dancer.

Their first concert was held in Cache Creek Casino’s Club 88 with Patricia Javier headlining the event. Like Gitmo, it was a huge success. Currently the Asian Dolls can be seen performing at Edna’s Ichiban Library on Tuesdays (Noelle) and Thursdays (Sher,Trisha and Shalimar).
By invitation and endorsements by Gitmo’s Station Commander , this talented ensemble is gearing up for another series of shows in different U.S. Bases all over the country and the world.

Subic association reunion 2009 in Las Vegas

The Subic Association of San Diego is sponsoring the holding of this year’s grand reunion of all St. James School alumni domiciled in the U.S. and abroad on July 25, 2009, at the Santa Fe Station Hotel, North Rancho Dr, Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is to be highlighted by, among others, a thanksgiving Mass that Philippine-based Bishop Teodoro Bacani will officiate at, to usher in an admixture of social, cultural, and educational activities.

It is to a big credit of Subicquenians leading the San Diego-based association that the St. James School has for years been enjoying no little dispensation of financial aid, thanks to its alumni’s palming out of donations thru the association’s sponsorship of their periodical homecoming. As a yearly routine, the association grants scholarship funds for deserving poor students enrolled in the school for want of Christian tenets-based education— understandably as engendered by parental desire. Then, as need arises, physical improvements are made possible mainly because of cash aid granted by the association. One typical example in this regard is the school’s reconstructed fence that was entirely funded out of a $3,500.00- cash aid.

To lend a hand in raising fund, a Subicquenian writer had proffered to have the whole cash equivalent of his author privilege-based discount of 50% enjoyed by the association, just thru a lent hand on disposal of a book titled “How to Get “A” Grades in School” that the writer had authored. Based on a 30-year exposure to practically every nature of all-grade level classroom situations, it is penned by Angel N. Pagaduan, a St. James School alumnus ’50. The book’s creationism-tinged, attention-nailing strategies for effecting normally focused learning constitute the essence of its fadeless utilitarian value as a result-proven guide for achieving A-1 schooling anywhere.

All Subicquenians wishing to relive the rejuvenating joys of friendship renewal and camaraderie of adolescence’s bygone years in their beloved alma mater and town of origin has only to call Mae Llamado-Esteban (619) 946-7139, Lilina O. Nacario (619) 656-9150, Precy Protacio (619) 475-1575, and Aileen Libby (619) 424-3464— all assigned immediate contact officers by Jaime “Jing” Eclar, association president.
